Their Style of Government
The Ukrainian government uses a three branch style of government, which includes a semi-presidential republic system with powers divided among the judicial, executive and legislative branches.
The Judicial Branch
The judicial branch consist of two bodies. The have a Supreme Court of Ukraine which rules all of the common laws throughout Ukraine. The second body is the Constitutional Court. This branch handles any problems against the Ukrainian constitution. The president and the prime minister elect the judges, and the parliament approves their decisions. The judges appointed serve life terms. This is a similar process that the United States government uses to appoint their judges
The Executive Branch
The executive branch has a president and prime minister. The president, or head of state is elected by a popular vote. The current president is Viktor Yanukovych. He was elected in 2010. The head of state serves a five year term. The current prime minister is Valeriy Khoroshkovskyy. He is the most powerful man in the executive branch. His real power is from the Cabinet of Ministers, which he appoints and is the leader of. The choices have to be approved by the parliament before they are in power.
The Legislative Branch
Their Legislative branch consist of a 450-seat unicameral parliament. Their parliament is the call the Verkhovna Rada. The members of the parliament our elected by popular vote. The parliament is responsible for the formation of the Ukrainian executive branch and the Cabinet of Ministers. Their legislative branch can be dissolved by the president or prime minister at anytime for anything, this is not a common thing to happen.
